Can you share a memorable customer story or situation that touched
you or reassured you of your passion for helping customers?
What’s a fun fact about you that
others may not know?
I’ll give you two. First, I was one of
25,000 applicants selected to appear on Shark Tank Season 4 — and I
did the dumbest thing ever: I turned
it down. The contract was awful. I
would’ve had to give up equity in my
startup just to appear on the show
and sign a 42-page agreement with
the worst terms I’d ever seen in my
career. That was a mistake!
I love to teach — with my kids, in the
classroom, and at work. Years ago,
I was teaching a market research
class in an MBA program for the
昀椀rst time, and honestly, I wasn’t
very good at it. After a few classes,
a student asked to be dropped from
the course. When I asked about his
goals, he said he wanted to become
an analyst at Procter & Gamble. I
encouraged him to stay one more
class and decide after that.
On a more personal note, my claim
to fame is playing basketball in
high school against a future NBA
All-Star MVP, in college with a future Heisman Trophy winner, and in
grad school against the person who
would become the all-time assists
leader in college basketball history.
I’ve told almost every employer in
my career that if the NBA calls me
on draft day, I’m taking the job. No
one has ever objected (with good
reason).
He stayed, completed the course,
and less than a year later I received
a card from him from Seoul, South
Korea. He shared that he had landed the job he wanted at P&G and
thanked me for pushing him to stay.
I still consider that moment the single biggest accomplishment of my
professional career.
How does it make you feel when your customers provide positive feedback after working with you?
It’s very satisfying and perhaps my greatest motivator. I’m at my best
when I have autonomy in my day to make an impact and feel appreciated
for the effort I put in.
